It is the last month of the year, and as 2024 concludes, here is another Top 5 Playlist, consisting of the songs I listened to the most this month. Starting with “Bwomp” by Mushroomhead, a song that goes back to the earlier years of this band. It is infectious, with synths’ that emulate the sound of strings, and aggressive rapping by former co-lead singer J-Mann. Also, Jeffrey Nothing’s vocals are desperate, and on this song we get a full display of his amazing range.
Next up is “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” by U2, of the soundtrack to Batman Forever, perhaps the first Batman movie I saw in a movie theatre. It is a infectious pop song by a band that had several phases throughout their career.
It is followed by “Home” by Dream Theater, a part of their opus Metropolis Part II, and one of the songs I heard live in their concert in Lisbon the last month. Although it is a long song, I love listening to the various movements and how they all blend beautifully together.
This year I finally got hold of Whitesnake’s Purple Album, one where David Coverdale and fellow bandmates cover songs from his tine in Deep Purple, and the result is an amazing straightforward hard rock album, where the ballad “Sail Away” is one of the highlights. It’s also very relaxing song to listen to at the end of a tiring day.
Also, one of my discoveries of the past few months was The Armed, having watched their UltraPop Live At The Masonic Temple concert film several times, with “All Futures” being the standout track to me. They are a band that defied my expectations, for I had ignored over the years, but thankfully this song and concert film have changed my perception of this hardcore collective for the best.
In conclusion, 2024 was a year of rediscovering songs of my life, but also digging into the catalogue of bands I had listened to over the years, like Dream Theater or Mushroomhead.
