This was a month mostly where I rediscovered some old songs that I had listened to since childhood, and throughout my formative years as a jazz student. Childhood-wise I refer to “Strange Angels” by Laurie Anderson the title track of one of this artists’ most accessible record. It’s a beautiful and melancholic song that tells a story of a night among friends, with great percussion and accordion accompaniment.
However, this months’ playlist opens with “Nemesis” by Aaron Parks: a song that is set in a complex but groovy metric making an ear-worm and a delight to play along to on the electric bass. This tune was a challenge to learn but it stuck with me ever since. “Daniel” by Bat For Lashes, on the other hand, is a song that evokes a warm and eerie feeling that I can’t really put my finger on it, but I always return to it, at some point or another in my life.
For many teenagers in Portugal, and throughout the world, the Limp Bizkit craze was one that left a mark in a very important period of one’s life. Myself, I would listen to Chocolate Starfish with my brother just for the cheer fun of it. Within it, the ballad “Hold On”, featuring Scott Weiland, is one of the songs that stuck with me over the years, and this month I rediscovered for the first time in many years.
“Crooked Creek” by Brian Blade is one of the songs I like to play most in the jazz context, since the twists and turns within make it such a challenge, but also because I just find so beautiful to listen to, which also makes it easy to memorize and play. The solos are tasteful and memorable. The ending, is gentle as coming home for the first time in years.
In conclusion, regarding the songs that I decided to include in my Top5 for November, most of them I listen to on repeat for days on end, others I just “dug up” and listened to sporadically throughout the month.
