September Top5 Songs

Starting off this months’ playlist is the song “Billie Holliday” by Warpaint, a rock band that mixes several influences into their songs, although the song that first introduced me to the band was this mesmerizing song from their debut EP, which I heard from the Rought Trade Sessions on Youtube. The studio version is slightly different with keyboard textures spread out all over the song, but the magic is the melancholy of the lyrics song by the all of the band members.

“My Favorite Things”, the album by John Coltrane, is among one of my all-time favourites, the song itself is the reason why, basically. An amazing song on three-four time, with an amazing solo by John Coltrane that grips from start to finish. A curious side fact, I didn’t make the connection between this song and the musical it originates from, The Sound of Music, until a former colleague from Hot Club Jazz School pointed it out to me.

“Blakkrakki” is the most recent single from Sólstafir’s upcoming album Hin Helga Kvöl, having only come out a few days ago, but I was hooked right from the beginning, this being a straightforward rock song, that is just, that good.

I first heard of Fleshgod Apocalypse when their album Agony came out in 2011, but I wasn’t able to enjoy their songs enough until I heard the singles from their most recent release: Opera. And the stand-out single for me is “Bloodclock, which as an incredibly well conceived orchestral arrangement with a harp intro and well balanced distribution of voices between their lead singer Francesco Paoli and Veronica Bordacchini, their clean vocalist.

The playlist concludes with Sepulturas’ “Territory”, from their classic Chaos A.D. from 1993. The lyrics are as relevant today as they were back then and the guitar solo courtesy of Andreas Kisser is the high point of this energy filled metal song.

And so I conclude another rundown of my Top5 Spotify playlist for the month of September. The songs were arranged in the order to which I listen to them, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
