Top5 January Songs – A brief recap

And so continuing with my trend of posting a monthly compilation of the tracks that I listened to the most every month, that began in September last year, here is the new Top 5 for the month of January. I began with this trend after getting the idea from the movie “High Fidelity” and starting this month I’m going to attach a blog post describing each track.

Starting with the first song, “Deutschland” a Rammstein song covered here by the piano duo Abélard. I first got acquainted with these amazing pianists when they opened for Rammstein in their concert here in Lisbon last summer. The cover is very faithful to the original but in a completely different context which is incredibly interesting to listen to.

Secondly, I have “Get Yourself High” by Chemical Brothers I song I used to listen to when I was younger and just reconnected with this month. It is just a plain fun time one can have by listening to it.

It is followed by the “Interdimmensional Summit” by Dimmu Borgir, the first single off their last studio album, Eonian, the best song I had heard by them, which blends the symphonic aspects of their music with the simple song structure, making it, in my opinion one of their most concise and best works.

Afterwards, I rediscovered Cobra Spell thanks to the fact that I was watching the documentary on Cryptas’ debut album, which features Sonia Anubis in her only recording with that band. The guitarist is the main composer in Cobra Spell and “S.E.X.” from their latest album 666 is an incredible earworm of a track, in the tradition of eighties metal like Judas Priest and more pop oriented bands like Motley Crüe. Impossible to get out of your head once you’ve heard a couple of times.

Finally, it’s “Yankee Division March” by the German one man black metal band, Kannonfieber, featuring Trevor Strand from Black Dahlia Murder. Beginning with an intro featuring an old tune, from I believe to be the First World War (the band is inspired by this historical period), the amazing riff kicks in and continues all the way to the end, merciless and catchy.

And so is the “brief” description of each song I selected for this month, the criteria being that the songs are the ones I listened to the most, or once heard, was not able to get out of my head. The second criteria is that I didn’t post these songs previously in a Top 5, which something I will maintain for the time being.

Lastly, this month I put these songs in the order that I would listen to them if I were to do so in sequence. Have a listen and enjoy!
